At a practical level, this is a hands-on workshop that equips participants with some of the tools and techniques for starting and tending fire, beyond matches and lighters:
• scanning for good tinder
• flint & steel, making and using char-cloth
• bow-drill history, context and use
Story-telling and indigenous-centred context setting, demonstration, coaching & troubleshooting with GOS instructors.
The magic is in the group. Working together is a joyful and effective way to ensure a fire is made and maintained. Co-operation, Communication, and Collaboration are essential tools in the firemaker’s toolbox.
Fire by Friction is led by Chris Green and Annie Sanassian, which means we’ll take time to discuss subsistence activities as an essential and vital part of modern education, and that fire making is a highly effective window into nature connection, ecological literacy, and precisely what children need most.
