Fire By Friction

  • The Guelph Outdoor School 733 Stone Road East Guelph, ON, N1E 3J3 Canada (map)

This is four hours spent re-engaging fire as a living thing: no matches, no bic lighters, no LEDs.

This is about the magic of doing something we've never done before, about bridging the gap from the imagined, to the actual. We are going to "rub wood together" and make fire. It will no longer something only from the movies. This is about fire as a force to evoke, not switch on. Fire as a mentorship tool for the younger generation, inspiring their journey into a wider world. This is about the practicalities of keeping yourself and loved ones cared for, safe and warm. This is about pushing yourself to an edge, and being with others during moments of failure and triumph. I love this workshop!!

Participants can expect to engage a wide range of fire making tools and techniques. From how to train our eyes for the good tinder, to the best fire making songs. Plus Flint & Steel, Char-cloth, hand-drill. We'll be working on a fire-bow kit to take home, and sharing in demonstrations & coaching to help with that first coal.

Ages 16+. Good Coffee & Tea, and big celebrations for every coal. Not to be missed! Hope to see you out there!
